about

This album features a group I assembled of talented members from the Sacramento jazz scene. It also features several of my mentors, who have provided invaluable inspiration and guidance in my personal development as a musician. It was a pleasure to collaborate with these musicians and close friends to be able to safely make music during the pandemic. This was the most recent project I recorded before moving to NYC.

Aaron Smith - trumpet
Levi Saelua - alto saxophone
Sterling Cozza - piano
Ben Kopf - bass
Chase Lokke - drums

Featuring:
Jacam Manricks - tenor saxophone
Joe Mazzaferro - trumpet
Mike McMullen - tenor saxophone
Henry Robinett - guitar

Here are some details about the music:

"De-Dah" is a classic composition by pianist Elmo Hope, one of the unsung heroes of jazz. It features a set of angular chords, offset by standard chord changes. In the original version the soloists improvise over a standard rhythm changes progression, however we decided to change it up a little for our rendition.

"Pensativa" is a composition by composer and arranger Clare Fischer. Levi and I had a special connection to Clare Fischer, as our teacher at the Eastman School of Music, Bill Dobbins, had a close relationship with him and often championed his work. This rendition pays homage to the Art Blakey version, while incorporating elements from Clare's original composition.

"I Remember Roy" is an original composition by Levi Saelua, written in tribute to the great trumpeter Roy Hargrove. I can speak for the group in saying that all of us were deeply influenced by Roy's music, and we miss him dearly.

"Simone" is a tune by saxophonist Frank Foster. Jacam first showed me this tune in a duo session and taught it to me by ear. I have fond memories of playing sessions at Jacam's home studio after he moved to Sacramento from NYC. He was also a motivating factor for me to make the move there myself!

"Con Alma" is a tune by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. This is an arrangement I wrote which starts with a duo improvisation and features a 3-chord vamp, and a reharmonization in the last 8 bars. Jacam really makes this one sing!

"The View From Here" is an original composition by Joe Mazzaferro. I have known Joe for many years since I first got to work with him at the Brubeck Colony Summer jazz workshop in 2012. During the pandemic, we started a quintet which played exclusively original music. This is one of the pieces from the repertoire of that group.

"Three Shades" is an original composition by Mike McMullen. It features three closely related themes which explore 3 different key centers. Mike has been a mentor to me from the very beginning of my musical development. He was a close musical collaborator with my jazz piano teacher in Sacramento, Joe Gilman, and I was honored that he agreed to take part in this project.

"Tones for Jones Bones" is a tune by famed jazz pianist Chick Corea. We lost Chick last year, and I was inspired to dive into his deep repertoire of compositions. This is one of the tunes I played frequently last year with the Henry Robinett Group, and with Henry's help I decided to feature it on this album.

"Tippin'" is a rhythm changes tune by pianist Horace Silver. This is one of the tunes we learned for our first gig as a quintet, for a livestream at MVJ. This tune is live, raw, and features the whole band!

Enjoy!
